Candidly Bi: Yeast Infection In Man

Can man get yeast infection?” Such is a question that can spark amusement from more than a few men who only have a vague idea of what the ailment is — and who its victims are. Yeast infection, which also goes by the moniker Candidiasis, is a fungal infection with a reputation for being a womanizer. Since it usually manifests in the vagina and is famous for being one of the leading causes of vaginal irritation, yeast infection in man can very well seem like a joke. That is, until one of the men gets it and realizes that it is no laughing matter.

Most men fail to understand the nature of the Candida fungus. It doesn’t target a specific gender; it aims to infect certain areas of the human body, particularly those that are moist and exposed. And though it is usually found in vaginas, it can also manifest on the skin, in the mouth, and, to the dismay of males, on the penis. Irritation, itching, soreness, and a burning sensation are all symptoms of penile yeast infection. The white discharge that is the Candida fungus’ trademark may appear as a yeast infection symptom in man as well. As with women, this discharge is odorless, but that provides little comfort to anyone who has to deal with it on top of the other symptoms.

While no male is free from the threat of yeast infection, men do have a considerable advantage over their female counterparts: the chances of yeast infection in man are a fraction of that in woman. Ironically, man’s good fortune only serves to make the few afflicted males incredibly unlucky. Since yeast infection is far more common in women, a lot more has been done to address the problem according to women’s specific needs. And scarce as the infection is in men, so too is the medicine dedicated to treating it. To make matters worse, there are times when the infection shows no clear symptoms in men, potentially leading to treatment that is too little, too late.

Short of yeast infection prevention then, the best option infected men can take is a universal approach to treatment. Rather than over the counter medication (which can be woman-specific or chock-full of undesirable side-effects), those infected should consider natural methods to remedy their condition. Going on a yeast infection diet for example, has proven to be very effective since certain foods fight yeast and promote recovery. Besides, yeast infection in man is, despite its rarity, completely natural. And who’s to say man can’t fight fire with fire?
